How the OPT unemployment clock actually works
If you're on post-completion F-1 OPT, USCIS allows a maximum of 90 cumulative days of unemployment during your 12-month OPT period. If you later get the 24-month STEM OPT extension, you get an additional 60 days, for a combined cumulative maximum of 150 days across the full OPT + STEM OPT period. Cross that limit and you're considered out of F-1 status, which can affect a future H-1B change of status and other visa applications.
The clock isn't measured from when you started searching, it runs from your official OPT start date on your I-20, and it counts every day you weren't in qualifying paid work in your field, not just full unemployment stretches. This tool adds those periods up for you.

No. Cap-gap extends your work authorization between your STEM OPT end date and H-1B start date if your petition was timely filed as a change of status, but it's separate from, and doesn't add to, your 90/150-day unemployment allowance.
